Millennium Tower

Abuja's unfinished prestige tower project, an architectural curiosity in the Central District

The Millennium Tower is one of Abuja's more instructive sights — not for what it is, but for what it represents. An ambitious 172-metre tower and cultural centre project begun in the late 2000s, it has been under construction for years with an uncertain completion date. The tower's distinctive form — a cylindrical shaft with viewing galleries planned for the upper levels — is visible from much of the Central District, and has become a familiar part of the skyline even in its incomplete state.

Projects of this kind have a long tradition in planned African capitals: grand infrastructure conceived as symbols of modernity that outlast the political will to finish them. Whether the Millennium Tower gets built to its intended design, scaled back, or quietly abandoned remains, at the time of writing, genuinely unclear. Worth noting as you pass through the Central District.
