Ogba Zoo and Nature Reserve

City zoo founded in 1915 with local wildlife, set in forested parkland

The Ogba Zoo, established in 1915, sits about 6 kilometres from the city center in a patch of secondary forest near the Ogba River. The zoo holds a collection of Nigerian wildlife — chimpanzees, baboons, crocodiles, pythons, West African sitatungas, and various birds — in enclosures that range from adequate to cramped. It is a modest facility by international standards, but the surrounding forest is genuinely pleasant for a walk.

For visitors who want a break from the city's noise and traffic, the zoo grounds offer shade and relative quiet. The animal collection is representative of what you would find in the forests and wetlands of southern Nigeria. Children enjoy the encounter with live animals; adults may appreciate it more for the forested setting than the exhibits themselves.
