The Royal Palace near King's Square is both an ancient institution and a living one. The Oba of Benin — the traditional ruler who leads the Edo people — still holds court here, and the palace grounds are used for ceremonies, royal audiences, and spiritual rites. The architecture reflects centuries of Edo craftsmanship: elaborate brass decorations, imposing gates, and bas-relief panels depicting warriors, divine beings, and historical scenes.
Access for visitors is limited and subject to royal protocols — this is not a museum but an active palace. Respectful dress is expected, and some areas require prior arrangement. The annual Igue Festival, held in December, offers the best opportunity to experience palace ceremonies: the Oba makes public appearances, and the palace grounds host traditional dances and rituals in a display of living Benin culture.
