When to Go

Ibadan has a tropical savanna climate with temperatures above 18C year-round. The wet season runs from March to October, with a dip in rainfall during August. Heavy rain can make outdoor sightseeing difficult and turns unpaved roads to mud.

From November to February, the Harmattan wind sweeps across from the Sahara, carrying dust that can reduce visibility and shade the sun. Locals call this cool, dry wind "The Doctor." The Harmattan lowers temperatures pleasantly but can cause flight delays when the dust is thick.

Festivals and Events

The New Yam Festival in August is an age-old celebration honoring the gods for a good harvest. It features masquerades, traditional dances, wrestling competitions, and sporting events, and is one of the most vibrant times to visit. Polo has a strong following in the region, and the annual polo festival draws players and spectators from across Nigeria.

Public Holidays

Major holidays include New Year (January 1), Workers' Day (May 1), Assumption Day (August 15), All Saints' Day (November 1), and Christmas Day (December 25).
