The Great Mosque stands close to the Emir's Palace in the heart of the Old City. It is closed to non-Muslims, but its modern minaret is visible from much of the surrounding area and the atmosphere outside during Friday prayers is striking — the square fills with worshippers spilling out of the gates. Worth timing a walk around the Old City to coincide with the midday call to prayer.
