Founded in 1962 and named after the first Premier of Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello University is the largest university in Nigeria and one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, with well over 35,000 students. The sprawling campus on the southern edge of Zaria has its own internal road network, banks, hospitals, and markets — in many respects a city within a city. The university's presence gives Zaria a cosmopolitan character unusual for a northern Nigerian city. The campus is pleasant to walk through; the main administrative building and the central library are notable landmarks, and the university museum holds an eclectic collection of natural history and regional archaeology.
