Zaria has a long tradition as a centre of Hausa craft production, and the old city market remains the best place to find authentic work. Leatherwork — sandals, bags, pouches, and decorated scabbards — is made to a high standard by craftsmen whose families have worked the same trade for generations. Indigo-dyed cloth (adire) and embroidered robes (babban riga) are the other specialities; Zaria-made garments were traded across the Sahara before the colonial period and quality remains high. Prices are negotiable and significantly lower than what you would pay for similar goods in Lagos or Abuja.
