Old City of Zazzau

The old walled city of Zazzau is the historic heart of Zaria, enclosed within earthen walls that still stand along much of their original line. Inside, the street pattern has changed little since the pre-colonial era: narrow lanes wind between compound walls, opening occasionally onto small squares where traders sit under thatched awnings. The old market near the palace is the best place to watch artisans at work — leatherworkers, weavers, and embroiderers whose crafts have been passed down through the same families for generations. Zaria was historically famous for its textile production, particularly indigo-dyed cloth, and cloth and leatherwork are still the best souvenirs to buy here. A walk through the old city takes about two hours at a relaxed pace.
