Getting Around

By Bus

Car Jaune is the island's public bus network, covering all major towns on the coastal ring road and several inland routes. Fares are cheap — a single ticket costs €2, a day pass €6. Buses run from around 6:00 to 19:00 on weekdays with reduced service on Sundays. The network is reliable for getting between towns but not useful for reaching the cirques or trailheads, which typically require a car.

By Car

Renting a car is the most practical way to explore the island, particularly for reaching Piton de la Fournaise, the cirque roads, and the western beaches. All major rental companies are at Roland Garros airport. Roads are well-maintained throughout; the mountain roads into the cirques are paved but narrow and steep. The road into Cilaos — famous for its 400 hairpin bends — requires confident driving. Allow plenty of time.

The coastal route around the island is the RN1 and RN2 — fast and well-signed. Driving the full circuit of the island takes about four hours without stops.

On Foot

Réunion has an excellent network of marked hiking trails maintained by the national park, including the long-distance GR R1 (which circles Piton des Neiges) and GR R2 (which crosses the island from north to south). Trailhead car parks exist at most major entry points. The Cirque de Mafate has no roads — all access is on foot. Gîtes (mountain huts) throughout the cirques and along the GR routes offer basic accommodation and evening meals; book ahead in peak season.
