Canopy Walkway

50-metre-high suspension bridge through the forest canopy

The Igishigishigi Trail starts at the Uwinka Reception Centre and runs roughly two kilometres through dense forest before reaching the canopy walkway — a 160-metre suspension bridge strung 50 metres above the forest floor. It's one of only three canopy walkways in Africa, and the only one that lets you stand level with the forest canopy as a casual visitor.

The walk takes about two hours round trip at a moderate pace, with a guide. The bridge itself sways noticeably when more than one person is on it, and the floor is open metal grating — vertigo sufferers will not enjoy it, but the views into the canopy are extraordinary. Mornings give the best chance of seeing turacos, hornbills, and the occasional troop of monkeys passing through the trees below.

A story
The walkway is the only one of its kind in East Africa, built in 2010 with anchors driven into bedrock to avoid disturbing the trees. From the platforms you look down on the crowns of mahogany and Symphonia trees that you'd normally only see from below, with turacos and great blue turacos flying past at eye level.
