Anse Possession

Anse Possession is on the north coast of Praslin, east of Anse Lazio, and far less visited than its famous neighbour. The beach is smaller and the setting more intimate — a curved bay flanked by coconut palms, with a village behind it and fishing boats pulled up on the sand. The water is calm and clear, excellent for swimming, and the crowd is a fraction of Anse Lazio's.

The easiest way to reach Anse Possession is by bicycle from the main road — Praslin is small enough to explore on two wheels, and a bike from any of the rental shops near the main jetty takes you here in under 20 minutes. The beach has a couple of informal restaurants serving grilled fish.

A story
The beach takes its name from the French captain Lazare Picault, who landed here in 1744 and took formal possession of the Seychelles for France. He buried a stone of possession on the beach. The Seychelles had no human inhabitants at that point — the first settlers arrived 27 years later. The stone itself is long gone, but the beach's name preserves the moment.
