The Wara Wara Mountains rise immediately to the east and south of Kabala, providing the town with its dramatic mountain backdrop and much cooler temperatures than the rest of Sierra Leone. The range is not as high as the Loma Mountains, but the closer hills are more accessible for day hikes from town without requiring the logistics of a multi-day expedition.
The Limba people have farmed the hillsides and valleys here for centuries. Visiting a Limba village in the mountains — with permission and ideally with a local guide — gives a sense of traditional highland life that has changed relatively little. The area also has waterfalls reachable on day walks, and the higher ridges offer wide views across the borderland with Guinea.
