Moa River Canoe Trips

Quiet canoe outings around Tiwai's forested channels, best for birds and possible pygmy hippo signs.

The Moa River is the island's boundary and one of the best ways to feel the scale of the forest. Canoe trips slip along the channels and sandbanks, with kingfishers, hornbills, herons, and monkeys often visible from the water. Pygmy hippos live here, though seeing one is rare and never guaranteed.

Go early or late in the day, when the heat drops and the light catches the banks. The river is also the route in and out of the island, so ask your guide about water levels, rain, and the safest time to travel.
