Garowe International Airport, about 12 kilometres from the city centre, has regular flights to Mogadishu and Bossaso operated by Somali airlines. There are no international flights — all connections route through Mogadishu or Bossaso. The flight from Mogadishu takes around two hours.
The main highway from the north runs through Garowe, connecting it to Bosaso and other Puntland towns by road. Road travel in Puntland requires careful security assessment and should not be undertaken without local guidance. Garowe itself is considered relatively stable by Somali standards, but kidnapping risk and general insecurity mean travel precautions are essential throughout. Most visitors to Garowe are NGO workers, journalists, or UN staff, and they invariably arrive with local contacts and security arrangements already in place.
