Mire Aware Stadium

The Mire Aware Stadium is Garowe's main sports facility, with a capacity of around 15,000. It hosted Somalia's first nationwide football tournament in 2010 — an event that had considerable symbolic weight in a country where organized football had been largely absent during the worst years of the civil war. The stadium is one of the more substantial pieces of public infrastructure in Garowe.

Football is by far the most popular sport in Puntland, and the stadium fills up for major matches. If you are in Garowe when a game is scheduled, it is worth attending — the atmosphere is lively and the event offers a window into everyday Somali social life that you won't find in most other places.
