The Somaliland National Museum opened in 2017 and covers the country's history from early archaeology through the colonial period, the civil war, and the years since independence. The collection includes archaeological artefacts from the Neolithic sites in the region, cultural objects from traditional Somali life, photographs and documents from the civil war, and natural history displays.
The museum is small by international standards but thoughtfully curated and genuinely informative. The civil war section is handled without euphemism, and the photographs from the 1988 bombardment and its aftermath are important to understand. Entry is inexpensive. Allow about an hour. Staff are generally willing to answer questions and the museum has English labelling throughout.
