When to Go

The Guban coast — Lughaya included — has one of the harshest climates in Africa. Summer (May–September) is genuinely punishing: daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and have been recorded above 47°C, the air is humid, and the southwesterly Kharif wind blows hot off the desert for weeks at a time.

November through February is the only practical visiting window. Daytime temperatures sit around 28–32°C, the air is drier, and the sea is at its calmest. The brief rainy seasons (the Heys in March–April and the lesser Dayr in October–November) bring short violent storms; flash floods can cut overland routes from the interior. Plan around the cool dry months and travel with locals who know the conditions.
