Getting There

Saylac is one of the harder places to reach in Somaliland. The most common approach is by 4x4 from Borama, a journey of around six hours on a rough track that crosses the desert. From Djibouti there is also an irregular overland route via Loyada, the border crossing, then south down the coast — also rough, and dependent on conditions at the frontier.

There is no public transport and no airport. Most visitors come on organised trips arranged through Hargeisa-based operators. A Somaliland permit (the standard tourist permit issued in Hargeisa) is required for travel to the Awdal region.

Once in town, accommodation is minimal — a handful of basic guesthouses and the option of pitching a tent. Bring most of what you need, including drinking water, with you.
