Mangrove Coast

Coastal mangrove forests east of the town, rich in birdlife

The coast immediately east of Saylac is fringed with mangrove forests — one of the largest surviving stretches on the Somaliland coast. The mangroves shelter crabs, mudskippers, and a remarkable variety of wading birds, including flamingos, herons, and migratory shorebirds in season. Sea turtles nest occasionally on the sandier stretches.

Local fishermen can take visitors out by small boat at high tide; at low tide you can walk parts of the foreshore. There is no formal protection or visitor infrastructure, which is part of the appeal. Bring water, sun cover, and a guide who knows the tides.
