The Magaliesberg is a quartzite ridge that runs for about 120 kilometres from Pretoria to Rustenburg, with Magaliesburg town tucked at its eastern foot. The range is not high — the peaks reach about 1,800 metres, only a few hundred above the surrounding highveld — but the ridges are steep, the cliffs are red, and the kloofs that cut into them harbour pockets of indigenous forest, baboons, eland, and over 250 bird species.
The 5,000-hectare Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment runs along the spine of the range and is managed for hiking and conservation. Several trails depart from farms in the valley: the most popular is the Tonquani Gorge trail in the central section, a full-day hike through one of the deepest of the kloofs. You need a permit (book through MagsWalks) and a guide is recommended for off-trail routes.
