Getting There

Most visitors approach Kruger from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The drive to the Numbi or Paul Kruger gates in the south takes about four hours on the N4 highway. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near Nelspruit (also known as Mbombela) receives flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and is 60–90 minutes from the southern gates. For the far north, Phalaborwa Airport is closest to the Phalaborwa gate.

Self-driving is the norm in Kruger, and a standard saloon car handles the tarred main roads perfectly well. Only the dirt internal roads, and particularly the roads in the north, require higher clearance. Vehicle hire is available at the airports and at Skukuza Camp. Entry gates open at sunrise and close at sunset; arriving and leaving within those hours is required.
