The Amarula Lapa is the visitor centre for Amarula, the cream liqueur made from the fruit of the marula tree. The marula is native to the Limpopo region and carries a particular association with elephants — the animals travel long distances to eat the ripe fruit, which ferments after eating and may produce a mildly intoxicating effect, though the legend of drunk elephants has been somewhat embellished over the years.
Tours take you through the history of the liqueur and the production process, and finish with a tasting. The marula fruit has a sharp, tropical flavour — distinctly unlike most European fruit liqueurs — and the cream version has become one of South Africa's best-known exports. The gift shop sells the full range and the adjoining restaurant does reasonable meals.
