Phalaborwa has a small regional airport with flights from Johannesburg on Airlink — the flight takes about an hour and lands directly in town. By road, it is roughly five hours from Johannesburg on the N1 north then the R71 east through Tzaneen; the drive through the Tzaneen valley is beautiful and worth doing in daylight. Hoedspruit, 60 kilometres to the south, has a larger airport with more frequent services and is an alternative gateway to the area.
