Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden

The oldest university botanical garden in South Africa, established in 1921 in the heart of the town. The garden is small but beautifully maintained, with a particularly strong collection of succulents, fynbos (the unique Cape floral kingdom), and Mediterranean climate plants from around the world. It is a genuine research garden rather than a tourist attraction, which makes it more interesting — plants are labelled scientifically and the planting is driven by botanical logic rather than visual showmanship.

Entry is free and the garden is rarely crowded. It is a good place to escape the summer heat under mature trees, and the succulent house is open year-round. Located on Neethling Street in the university campus area.
