Al-Nilin Mosque

A modernist mosque on the White Nile riverfront in Omdurman

The Al-Nilin (Two Niles) Mosque is one of Khartoum's more memorable pieces of modern architecture. It sits on the Omdurman side of the White Nile, just downstream of the Mogran confluence, and is designed in the shape of a giant seashell — the white concrete shell-curves and minaret create a striking silhouette against the river.

Completed in the early 1980s, the mosque is the work of Sudanese architect Gamar al-Daw and represents an attempt to find a distinctively modern Sudanese style. Visitors are usually welcome outside prayer times if dressed appropriately, and the riverfront promenade outside is a popular evening walk for local families.
