Bars and Cafes

Khartoum has no bars in the conventional sense — alcohol has been banned in Sudan since 1983 — but it has a strong cafe and juice-bar culture. Tea ladies set up charcoal stoves on street corners and brew sweet milky tea (shai bil leben) and hibiscus karkadeh into the small hours, and Khartoum 2 has a clutch of cafe-restaurants where expats and middle-class Sudanese spend the evenings over fresh juices and shisha.
