The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation is a reminder of a community most people forget Sudan ever had. From the late 19th century into the 1950s, Khartoum had a substantial Greek population — traders, hoteliers, restaurateurs — and they built this small Byzantine-style church in the colonial downtown to serve their needs.
Most of the community left after independence and the political turbulence of the following decades, but the church remains in use, and the surrounding compound includes a community hall and the offices of the Hellenic Club. The building itself is modest but pretty, with a tiled dome and a quiet courtyard, and the friendly priest will usually let visitors in to look.
