Things to Do

Most people come to Arusha to organise safaris, and the tour operator district around Boma Road is where this happens. For in-town sights, the Arusha Natural History Museum and the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre are both worthwhile. The Arusha Declaration Monument is a short walk away, and the Arusha Clock Tower at the central roundabout marks the midpoint of the Cape-to-Cairo Road. Via Via bar in the gardens behind the Natural History Museum is a good place to find safari companions and ask for operator recommendations.

For day trips, Arusha National Park is the most accessible wildlife experience — half a day brings you colobus monkeys, the Momela crater lakes, and views of Mount Meru. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda operated here for two decades; the facility is not open to visitors, but its presence adds a layer to the city's history.
