The waterfront in Kigoma is not formally laid out, but a series of dirt paths and short stretches of road let you walk almost the entire shore of the inner harbour. Start at the railway pier, where you can usually see whichever boats are in port, and walk north past the customs warehouses to the fishing landings, or south towards the Hilltop and Aqua Lodge area where the lake opens out.
The point of the walk is the light and the sense of the lake's scale. Tanganyika is the longest freshwater lake in the world, and standing at the edge as the sun sets behind the mountains on the Congolese side is one of the simple pleasures of being here. The shore is generally clean and safe; bring shoes that can handle some mud after rain.
