Mahale lies a long day's boat ride south of Kigoma, on a peninsula of forested mountains plunging straight into Lake Tanganyika. The setting is genuinely extraordinary: white-sand coves backed by jungle and 2,400-metre peaks, with no roads, no airstrip at the park itself, and only a handful of small camps. Reaching it requires either a chartered flight to nearby Mahale or two days on a slow boat from Kigoma, but those who make the journey rate the place among the most beautiful in Africa.
The draw is the chimpanzees — a larger and less crowded operation than Gombe, with longer tracking walks through old-growth forest. Sightings are not guaranteed but are very common in the dry months. Outside the chimp programme, the park offers good snorkelling on its cichlid-rich reefs, hikes into the cooler montane forest higher up, and the simple pleasure of a beach where you might not see another visitor for days. Plan on at least three nights to make the journey worthwhile.
