Logi Mbuga Wetland

A seasonal wetland in the flooded margins of the Mtera Reservoir, reached by turning west at Chipogoro and following the track to Logi village. The mbuga (the Swahili word for the seasonally flooded grassland plains characteristic of this part of Tanzania) fills in the rainy season and contracts in the dry months, concentrating birds along its retreating edges.

Local guides from Logi village can take visitors into the reeds and along the water's edge. They know where to find the more secretive species — painted snipe, African jacana, various rail species — that a visitor scanning the open water would miss. A morning or half-day with a guide is the most productive way to work this site. Fees are modest and negotiated at the village. There is no formal accommodation at Logi; most visitors base themselves in Iringa or camp.
