Galanos Hot Springs

The Galanos Sulphur Springs lie about 18 km north-west of Tanga, on the road towards the Kenyan border — a clutch of small natural pools where warm sulphurous water bubbles up out of the ground. The name comes from a Greek planter who developed the springs as a small spa in the 1930s; a few crumbling buildings from that era still stand among the palms.

The pools are shallow and the sulphur is strong, so this is a soak-your-feet rather than a long swim. Locals come for the supposed medicinal properties. Pair the springs with a visit to the Amboni Caves on the same outing — both are off the same secondary road.
