Irente Viewpoint

The Irente Viewpoint is the most dramatic outlook in the Western Usambara Mountains, reached by a two to three hour walk from Lushoto through cultivated farmland and patches of remnant forest. The escarpment edge drops abruptly to the plains 900 metres below, and on clear days the views extend to Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon.

The Irente Farm Lodge near the viewpoint serves good lunches using produce from their own organic farm — Swiss cheese, fresh vegetables, and homemade bread. It is one of the best places to eat in the Usambara Mountains and well worth timing a walk to coincide with lunch. The farm also offers accommodation.

A story
The escarpment at Irente drops nearly 1,000 metres to the Maasai plains in a near-vertical wall. On clear mornings, before the heat haze builds, you can see across the plains to Kilimanjaro — the snow-capped peak floating above the African plains more than 100 kilometres away. The Adnyamathanha people of the region have a name for this view; the German colonists who established Wilhelmstal knew it too, which is partly why they built their hill station here.
