The Usambara Mountains are walking country. The Western Usambaras around Lushoto offer the most accessible routes: the half-day walk to Irente Viewpoint for escarpment views and lunch at the farm is the most popular short excursion. Longer routes into Magamba Forest and the two-day walk to Mtae require more time but repay it.
The Eastern Usambaras, accessed via Muheza, are the best destination for serious birdwatching — the Amani Nature Reserve holds endemic species found nowhere else in the world. A guide is essential and accommodation at the old research station is available.
Casual nature walks through the Shume and Magamba forest areas can be arranged in Lushoto, with local guides from various guesthouses.
