Magamba Forest

Magamba Forest is a protected forest reserve on the northern edge of the Western Usambaras, about 12 kilometres north of Lushoto. It is one of the better preserved forest patches in the Western Usambaras and offers the best chance in this range for forest birds — including the Usambara weaver, the African violet-backed starling, and various forest flycatchers.

Guided walks into Magamba can be arranged through guesthouses in Lushoto and take three to five hours. The forest is genuinely dense in places, requiring a guide to navigate the tracks. The trees include giant specimens of East African cedar and African violet trees. The Magamba River runs through the forest and provides water for the communities downstream.
