Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), seven kilometres south of Stone Town, has direct flights from Doha, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Istanbul, and seasonal European charters from Italy, Germany and Poland. From Dar es Salaam there are roughly hourly short flights with Precision Air, Coastal Aviation or Auric Air. A taxi from the airport to Stone Town is a fixed-fare ride; agree it before getting in.
The cheaper alternative from the mainland is the ferry from Dar es Salaam. Azam Marine runs three or four daily fast catamarans that cross in about two hours; book the morning sailing in the rough season (June–August), when the afternoon crossing is reliably miserable. The ferry docks at the port immediately north of Forodhani Gardens — five minutes' walk into Stone Town.
Independent travel between Zanzibar and the smaller spice islands of Pemba and Mafia is by small plane or local dhow.
