Livingstone's House

19th-century house where David Livingstone prepared for his final African expedition

Livingstone's House stands just outside the tightest lanes of Stone Town, a plain 19th-century building with a much larger historical shadow. It was built around 1860 for Sultan Majid and later used by European explorers and missionaries; David Livingstone prepared here before setting out on his final journey into the African interior.

Do not expect a polished museum. The building's interest is mainly historical, and access can be limited depending on current use. If you are tracing Zanzibar's role in exploration, mission history, and the caravan routes inland, it is worth the short detour.
