Mercury House (Freddie Mercury's Birthplace)

Childhood home of the Queen frontman, now a small museum

Mercury House is a small private museum on the ground floor of an unremarkable Shangani street, marked only by a modest sign over the door. Inside are a few albums, posters, vinyl records, a replica of the yellow military jacket from Wembley 1986, and a handful of family photographs from Mercury's Zanzibar childhood.

It will take you fifteen minutes and is worth it if you are a fan; otherwise the building itself is unremarkable and you can simply photograph the plaque outside. The location's other claim is more atmospheric — the lane runs directly into the Africa House Hotel terrace, which is one of the best sunset spots in town.

A story
Farrokh Bulsara, later Freddie Mercury, was born in this Shangani apartment in 1946 to Parsi parents from British India who worked for the colonial High Court. The family fled Zanzibar during the 1964 revolution; he never returned, but his sister did a single visit in the 1990s.
