The open savanna away from the river is harder country to see game in but rewards a patient drive at the right time of day. Antelope (waterbuck, hartebeest, kob, occasionally roan), warthog and primates are the most likely sightings, with carnivores — leopard and side-striped jackal — present but very seldom seen.
A 4x4 with good clearance is essential outside of the main tracks; in the wet season many tracks become impassable for weeks at a time. The visitor centre near the southern entrance can sometimes arrange a vehicle and a ranger; otherwise, hotels in Kara or Mango can put you in touch with a driver who knows the park.
