Akodéssewa

Outer eastern district, site of the famous fetish market

Akodéssewa is a poor, mostly unpaved neighbourhood about four kilometres east of the centre, beyond the lagoon and the port. It is best known as the site of the Marché des Féticheurs, the vast voodoo market that draws tourists, healers and traditional priests from across the Bight of Benin.

Beyond the market, Akodéssewa is residential — a typical edge-of-Lomé district of single-storey concrete houses, sandy lanes and small workshops. There is little to see other than the market itself, but taxi drivers know the route well and the trip out is worthwhile if you are not in a hurry. Combine with a visit to Bè and Lake Bè for a half-day exploring the older, lived-in eastern half of the city.
