Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Lac

1910 Catholic cathedral with African-themed stained glass, visited by Pope John Paul II in 1985

The Catholic cathedral of Our Lady of the Lake stands a hundred metres back from the water on Togoville's main square — a pale, slightly weathered building completed by German missionaries in 1910. The exterior is plain, but the interior is striking: a series of stained-glass windows show biblical scenes with explicitly African figures and settings, against a backdrop that incorporates Togolese landscapes and Vodou symbols.

A short plaque in the nave commemorates the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1985, who came specifically to acknowledge the parallel survival of Vodou tradition in the area. The cathedral is usually unlocked during the day; a small donation is welcomed. Mass is sung in Mina and French on Sundays.

A story
Pope John Paul II's visit on 8 August 1985 — the first papal visit to Togo — is remembered locally as the moment the church acknowledged the deep coexistence of Catholic and Vodou practice in the area. The Pope met with both Catholic clergy and Vodou priests during his short stop, and several photographs of the meeting hang in the cathedral porch.
