Dougga's theatre is cut into the hillside in the standard Greco-Roman way, with the curve of seating fitted to the natural slope and the stage wall facing out over the valley. It seated 3,500 spectators and is among the best-preserved theatres of the Roman world: the orchestra, the proscenium foundations, and most of the seating are largely intact.
In summer the theatre still hosts occasional performances during the Dougga Festival, with classical Tunisian and European productions staged where they were intended to be. Even outside festival nights it is the spot most travellers find themselves lingering longest — the combination of light, proportion, and view is genuinely unusual.
