Hammamet Beach

The main beach in Hammamet is a wide, gently shelving arc of pale sand along the Gulf of Hammamet. The Gulf is enclosed enough to suppress large waves, making the water calm and warm — sea temperatures reach 27°C in August. The beach south of the old Medina is the most attractive section, with views back up to the kasbah walls.

Watersports are available throughout the main beach area: jet-skis, parasailing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing equipment. The beach is well maintained in the resort section. Going further south toward Yasmine Hammamet, the beach widens and becomes progressively less crowded.

A story
Hammamet was Tunisia's first beach resort — the combination of the wide sandy bay, sheltered Gulf position, and proximity to Tunis made it the natural choice for the first wave of European tourism in the 1960s. The beach south of the Medina, where the original resort development began, is still the best stretch.
