The Roman site of Pupput lies about three kilometres from Hammamet's old centre, in the suburb of Aghir. It preserves the excavated remains of a Roman city that flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, including mosaic floors, the outlines of public baths, and sections of the street grid. The mosaics are well-preserved and give a vivid impression of how wealthy this town was at its peak.
The site is small and can be seen in an hour. It is significantly less visited than the major Tunisian Roman sites (Dougga, El Djem, Carthage), which makes it a pleasantly unhurried experience. Entry is cheap. The combination of Pupput in the morning and the kasbah and Medina in the afternoon makes a good full-day itinerary around Hammamet's history.
