Remla

Remla is the largest settlement on the Kerkennah Islands and the administrative centre of the archipelago. It sits on the southern edge of Chergui, the eastern island. There is not much to see in the strict sense — a few cafés, the weekly market on Sunday, a small harbour with fishing boats, a couple of grocery shops — but it is the closest thing the islands have to a town, and it gives you a sense of how life works here.

The market in particular is worth timing your visit around. Farmers from across both islands bring in dates, olive oil, sea sponges, and fish; women sell embroidered cloth and palm-frond baskets. The cafés on the main square are good places to sit and watch the slow pace of island life with a mint tea. Banks and a post office are here if you need them — there is much less infrastructure elsewhere on the islands.
