Corbeille of Nefta

Vast palm-filled basin in the centre of town — Nefta's signature landscape

The Corbeille is the natural feature that defines Nefta. A roughly circular depression about a kilometre across at the centre of the town, it is filled with a dense forest of date palms and the white domes of dozens of small marabouts (saints' tombs) — Nefta is one of the holy cities of Tunisia, with strong Sufi traditions. The Café de la Corbeille on the northern rim is the best viewpoint, and you can also walk down into the palmery on a path from the western side.

Visit at sunrise or sunset, when the light pours into the bowl and the white domes catch the warm tones. The walk down takes 15 minutes; allow an hour for a proper wander among the irrigation channels and gardens at the bottom. Bring water; the bowl traps heat.

A story
The Corbeille — French for 'basket' — sits about 25 metres below the level of the surrounding town. For centuries dozens of springs bubbled up from its floor, watering a forest of date palms estimated at 200,000 trees and irrigating a tiered garden of figs, pomegranates, and citrus. The springs largely failed in the 20th century after groundwater extraction for irrigation; the palms now depend on pumped water. The view from the rim, especially at sunrise, remains one of the most striking sights in Tunisia.
