Lars Homestead (Star Wars location)

Original Tatooine film set of Luke Skywalker's home — preserved in the desert outside Nefta

The Lars Homestead is the white-domed exterior set used as the home of Luke Skywalker on the planet Tatooine in the original 1977 Star Wars film. It sits on the edge of the Chott el-Gharsa salt flat, about 15 km from Nefta. The interior scenes were filmed at the cave hotels of Matmata further south, but the iconic exterior — the dome poking up from the desert with twin suns setting behind it — is here.

Reaching the site requires a 4x4 or a guide, as the track turns off the road across the salt flats and is not signposted. Several agencies in Nefta and Tozeur offer half-day Star Wars tours that combine the homestead with the Mos Espa film set further north. Bring water and sun protection; there is no shade.

A story
George Lucas filmed exteriors for the original 1977 Star Wars at locations around Nefta and Matmata. The Lars homestead's distinctive domed exterior was built for the film on a salt flat about 15 km west of Nefta and was abandoned afterwards. By the early 2000s it had deteriorated badly; a group of fans funded its restoration in 2012, and the dome has been weatherproofed since. The set is unsigned, unfenced, and free to visit.
