Mos Espa Set

Star Wars Episode I prequel set, an entire fake town in the dunes north of Nefta

Mos Espa is the largest of the Star Wars sets in southern Tunisia — an entire desert town built for the 1999 prequel The Phantom Menace and left in place after filming. It sits about 25 km north of Nefta in a stretch of low dunes, reached by 4x4 from the asphalt road. The set covers several hundred metres and includes the slave quarter, pod-racer arena, and ornamented archways from the film.

The dunes are advancing on the set and burying buildings — what you see now is significantly reduced from a decade ago. Local guides argue about its future; some see it as a unique attraction worth preserving, others as a film prop that should be left to the sand. Whatever happens, it is currently still standing and is the most photographable of the Star Wars locations.

A story
The Mos Espa set was built for Star Wars Episode I — The Phantom Menace in 1997 and used for the slave-quarter scenes of young Anakin Skywalker. Unlike the older Tatooine sets it is a substantial complex of two dozen buildings: a market square, a Jedi council chamber, a slave hovel, and the famous pod-racer arena. Sand dunes have been creeping over it since filming wrapped, and parts of the set have been moved or partially buried; the local authorities periodically dig it out.
