Souk El Haddadine

The Souk El Haddadine — the blacksmiths' and metalworkers' market — is one of the most atmospheric streets in the Sfax medina. The narrow lane is lined with small workshops where craftsmen hammer, cut, and weld metal into gates, locks, agricultural tools, decorative screens, and household items. The sound of hammering and the smell of hot metal permeate the air.

The souk is a living example of a craft tradition that predates the Arab conquest, and the organisation of the street — with related trades clustered together — follows the same pattern as the medieval Islamic city. Unlike souvenir markets, the goods here are made for local use. Watching the craftsmen work is free; buying a hand-forged lock or hinge makes an unusual souvenir.
