The Sfax War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, lies about 3 km from the city centre and contains the graves of Allied soldiers who died during the North Africa campaign of World War II. Sfax was captured by the Eighth Army in April 1943 during the push towards Tunis, and the cemetery holds those who died in the fighting around the city.
The cemetery is immaculately kept in the CWGC tradition — white headstones in green grass, each with name, rank, regiment, and date of death. It holds graves from the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, and New Zealand, reflecting the multinational character of the Allied force in North Africa. Like all CWGC cemeteries, it is freely open and always accessible.
